Pros

  • Google tag manager is easy to work and use. There are resources and top-level support from the platform itself.
  • GTM allows me to inject code onto my site including snippets without having to ask my DevOp team to do it for me.
  • It's pretty simple. This allows us to add tags and track certain data points and key metrics on our site and see how effective we are at retaining and keeping users.
  • Witth some research, the possibilities are endless when it comes to finding out information about visitor behavior. Very useful for optimizing user experience.
  • Google Tag Manager provides a one-stop place to manage all analytics containers (also called tags), like Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Pixel, Google Analytics code etc.
  • The user interface is fairly intuitive but there is a big online community out there that usually have solutions to anything you may want to do with Tag Manager.

Cons

  • You need a little knowledge of what is about a tag and how it works. All definitions could be confusing at the beginning but with more time and experience it takes easier.
  • Google Tag Manager slows down a site's download speed. And that's the only thing I don't like.
  • It's not intuitive at all but requires, at times, quite a lot of work to figure out how to set up different tags.
  • Occasionally the data can be questionable and we have to go diagnose how the tag is set up. This is likely not a problem with non-custom websites however.
  • Sometimes the tag doesn't fire and it's hard to manage the cookies and tags when there are many people working in the same environment.
  • It was a bit hard when configuring the first time, but after that, no issues. Therefore nothing to dislike about the tool.
